What Is the Digital Rupee?

The e₹ (e-Rupee) is a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) issued directly by RBI. Unlike UPI (which moves money between bank accounts), e₹ is itself a digital form of currency — like a digital banknote. It is programmable, can work offline, and doesn't require a bank account.

2026 Pilot Status

The retail e₹ pilot is active in 15 cities across major banks — SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Kotak, and others. The focus area for 2026 is testing offline functionality for feature phones and low-connectivity areas, and programmable transfers (where money can be restricted to specific purposes, like agriculture subsidies).

What It Means for You

For most urban smartphone users with a bank account, e₹ doesn't change day-to-day payments significantly — UPI already works seamlessly. The e₹'s real impact will be felt in rural India, government benefit transfers, and cross-border payments where it enables faster settlement.
